ABOUT US

The Old Stone House is a boutique garden events venue located in Bungendore in the NSW Southern Tablelands, approximately 40 kms north-east of Canberra city and 260 kms south of Sydney. The owners, John and Debbie, welcome guests onto their property to share in special events with their daughter, Rachael, managing the business and co-ordinating the events.

The Old Stone House might just be the perfect venue for you if you’re wanting a relaxed gathering for up to 90 guests set in an elegant Maharaja-style marquee on an acre of beautifully landscaped gardens.

As the functions and weddings are all held outdoors our season operates from October-April to make the most of what the gardens have to offer.

THE HISTORY

OF THE HOUSE

Known by locals as "Boysville" the property was originally built by John Donoghue as his family residence and dry goods store. The second story was completed some twelve months after the owner's had established their family home. Over the years the property has seen many owners and many uses.

The second owners, the McJannetts, settled in quite nicely. Mrs McJannett bore fourteen children in the home without plumbing, running water or a kitchen to speak of. In 1901 the first extension to the property was completed. It consisted of a kitchen and scullery (now known affectionately as the snug).

The McJannetts resided here for fifty years before moving to the Oaks Estate, ACT where their descendants still reside. Mr McJannett was a founding member of the Lake George Committee, established to lobby for the capital of Australia to be established at Lake George.

In the late 1980s, after years of neglect, the house was saved from dereliction. The Draper family spent the next decade painstakingly restoring the property to its former glory. In 2001, the property started a new life offering accommodation for all to enjoy.

Current owners Debbie and John have been fortunate to host many relatives from past families and in turn learn a little more about the history of Elmsvilla, Boysville, and now The Old Stone House and the colourful characters who have lived here (and still come to visit).

Originally built in 1861, the house celebrated its 160th anniversary in 2021.
